The trick is usually to ensure there is space between colors to avoid overlap that could create problems during the print process.
In terms of cost, adding a 2nd color is typically very minimal on a per box price, especially since most machines are designed to print up to 3 colors in the same pass. The added cost to consider is typically a one time print plate cost, which is $400-600 on average per color used.
